Autumn Budget 2025: Key Updates for Apprenticeships, Skills & Employer Training

The Autumn Budget, announced on 26 November 2025, introduced several measures that will influence apprenticeship funding, skills development and training opportunities over the next few years.

Fully Funded Apprenticeship Training for SMEs (Under-25s)

From 2026, apprenticeship training for learners aged under 25 taken on by small and medium-sized businesses will be fully funded by the Government.

This removes the previous employer contribution and is expected to encourage more SMEs to bring young talent into their workforce. It also opens up more opportunities for learners starting their careers.

This change could lead to:

  • More businesses taking on apprentices
  • Increased opportunities for young people
  • Growth in entry-level roles across multiple sectors

National Minimum Wage for Apprentices Rising in 2026

From the 1st of April 2026, the apprentice minimum wage will increase to £8.00 per hour.

This uplift helps ensure apprenticeships remain a competitive and attractive pathway into work and training.

Investment in Key Sectors Supporting Future Apprenticeships

Several priority areas highlighted in the Budget are closely linked to apprenticeship pathways and future workforce demand:

  • Healthcare & life sciences
  • Digital and technology roles
  • Green energy, sustainability and engineering
  • Construction and infrastructure
  • Manufacturing & logistics

These investments may lead to more apprenticeship opportunities over the coming years, particularly in technical and operational fields.

What This Means for Employers

For organisations considering apprenticeships, the Budget provides a supportive environment:

  • Under-25 SME apprentices will have fully funded training from 2026
  • The apprentice wage increase helps strengthen candidate attraction
  • Sector investment may expand apprenticeship pipelines
  • Apprenticeships remain an effective way to grow future talent and address skills gaps

Next Step Apprenticeships Support

Next Step Apprenticeships will continue to monitor funding and policy updates, and support employers in building skilled, motivated teams through apprenticeships across Sussex and the wider UK.
